![]() ![]() Isaac can be seen scared and confused under the forceful hand of his father. The Angel is holding on to Abraham’s arm tightly and also pointing in the direction of the lamb. In the Sacrifice of Isaac, Abraham is seen with his right arm extended towards Isaac, hand vigorously holding on to the knife while the left had is holding down Isaac’s neck. The Baroque era paintings often depicted action and drama. A Ram appeared and Abraham sacrificed that instead. Abraham took his son up to a mountaintop and just as he was about to offer him up to God, an Angle called upon him to stop. In this story Abraham, God’s faithful servant, is commanded by God to kill his only son, which was given to him by God. The Sacrifice of Isaac is referencing a story from the Bible, specifically Genesis 22. The Painting is now held at the Uffizi Museum in Florence. The Sacrifice of Isaac was painted in 1602 and was commissioned by Cardinal Barberini. From what is known about him, he seemed to get into trouble with the law and would often brawl with others. Caravaggio also drew what are considered to be violent paintings. ![]() Caravaggio is known for his dramatic and realistic paintings like the one above. Caravaggio is an example of how the Council of Trent influenced artists of that time. The Council of Trent had ended in 1563 and declared that art should depict religious qualities in a way that would make people think about faith and its importance to mankind.
